Three major announcements made by Apple
1️⃣ Apple launches News Partner Program with a 15% commission rate instead of 30%. Only for publishers that operate Apple News channel in Australia, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
This program is designed for subscription news publications that provide their content to Apple News in Apple News Format (ANF). ANF also supports advertising, and publishers keep 100 percent of the revenue from advertising they sell within Apple News. 
Apple has already provided a similar successful program with Video Partner Program since 2016.

2️⃣ On August 26, Apple announced a number of changes coming to the App Store that, pending court approval, will resolve a class-action suit from US developers.
  • Clarification: Developers can use communications, such as email, to share information about payment methods outside of their iOS app (users must consent to the communication).
  • New: Apple will expand the number of price points available to developers for subscriptions, in-app purchases, and paid apps from fewer than 100 to more than 500.
  • Extension: App Store Small Business Program and its 15% reduced commission rate will be applicable for a period of 3 years.
3️⃣ On September 1, Apple announced it would allow developers of “reader” apps to include an in-app link to their website for users to set up or manage an account.
The change will:
  • go into effect in early 2022;
  • be applied globally;
  • to apps that provide previously purchased content or content subscriptions for digital magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music and video. Games are excluded.
This decision is part of a settlement with Japan’s anti-trust regulator that is enough for it to close a five-year investigation into Apple that focused on video and music apps.

South Korea passes a bill limiting Apple and Google control over app store payments.
A bill was submitted to South Korea’s parliament last month and approved last week. It means that developers will be able to avoid paying commission to major app store operators by directing users to pay via alternate payment systems.

This initiative follows another regulatory threat in the USA where three Senators introduced a new bill called Open App Markets, asking to require Apple & Google to allow third-party app stores on their operating system.
Netflix starts testing Android games for users in Poland.
Interesting bundling initiative by Netflix Poland announced on August 26:
Starting today, members in Poland can try Netflix mobile gaming on Android with two games — Stranger Things 1984 and Stranger Things 3 — all as part of their membership
The games will show up in Netflix home feed. If the user taps on a game’s icon, he can learn more about the game and tap a button to download it from Google Play. After the game is downloaded, the user will be asked to log in with his Netflix credentials before he can start playing.

Zomato, the Indian Food Delivery Decacorn, is embracing subscription services.
Zomato is an Indian restaurant aggregator and food delivery company. In mid-July, it listed its shares in Indian stock markets. Its initial public offering (IPO) gave it a valuation of $12 billion.
Zomato has two subscription plans:
  • Zomato Pro that provides benefits of up to 40% discount on dining out and up to 30% on delivery;
  • Zomato Pro Plus that is an ‘invite-only’ upgrade of Zomato Pro that offers no delivery and surge fee, when you order food on Zomato.

Pearson bets on direct-to-student subscription shift.
Pearson, the educational publisher, launched last month an app (Pearson+) offering US students access to all 1,500 of its titles for a monthly subscription of $14.99. This price represents a massive discount to the current list prices for Pearson’s textbooks.
The CEO says to Financial Times:
Essentially we’re going to move from the ownership to the access model, just as the music industry moved from the ownership of a song to Spotify and iTunes.
The 1st Purchasely-Amazon implementation is live
